On our trip to the Museum of the Moving Image I learned about the intricate details of what goes into designing a set and the ideas surrounding scenes within a movie or show. Just as we had done in class, film creators created rough edits using storyboards as well as set designs. For example there were small set models to show the planned areas that production would take place in. We also learned about film costumes and how lots of research went into costume design based on the time period as well as the class that was being depicted in the film. The guide also discussed the history of the movie theaters and movie snacks. Movie became popular after the great depression in an effort for individuals to escape their daily lives. Drive in movie theaters were also a big hit as people in small town flocked to see popular films. In Donnie Darko, the Life Line scene begins with Donnie entering the frame from off screen and joining his gym teacher Ms. Farmer, showing us a medium long shot of both characters within the frame at a neutral angle. As Donnie begins to read the exercise on the card, there is a close up shot of the card he is reading off of to show viewers what he is reading. We become Donnie's eyes as we read along with what he is reading out loud to the class. The next shots shows a medium shot of him and Ms. Farmer as they argue over their conflicting views, the direction of their eyes align as the shots alternate from both of the characters using the 180º rule. The scene begins to shoot the class as they react to the argument occurring using a medium shot, but filming the students in the front row with greater more focus. The camera switches back to a medium long shot of Ms. Farmer and Donnie still standing in front of the chalk board. The next shot is another of the class but this time the b...

I did my sound walk in Park Slope, specifically on 7th and 8th ave in the afternoon. When I exited the train station I heard the piercing wail of a siren coming from two ambulances as they raced down the street. As I continued walking I heard dogs barking as they passed by one another and the leashes that their owners held onto jingled as the dogs paced back and forth near each other. Kids began getting out of school and I heard as they talked to their parents about what had happened in school. A woman sneezed as she walked past me and a couple across the street laughed as they wrapped their arms around each other. A child screamed, throwing a gnarly tantrum outside a bakery because he wouldn’t be getting a cupcake that he desperately wanted. Later, another boy ran after his group of friends, making thumping sounds as his feet hit the pavement and shouting for them to wait for him. My name is Iya Hawkins, I'm from Brooklyn but both my parents are originally from Jamaica. I’m a sophomore at Hunter College pursuing a Media Studies degree. I’m still debating whether or not to choose a concentration in journalism or emerging media or to pursue a General Media Studies degree. I took Media 150 last year and enjoyed learning how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I thought it was really interesting and helped me to gain a greater perspective on the graphic design aspects of media. I’ve always been interested in writing and made a habit of keeping a journal when I was younger. I bought a new journal recently, but I haven’t made a commitment to writing in it often so there a big chunks of time missing, I’m talking about months apart.  I really enjoy writing although I forget to write in my journal, including essays if they follow a topic that’s interesting. I love watching youtube and I find commercials really interesting. I might try going into advertising ...
